Why Join

Your son has embarked upon a great adventure by becoming part of the Sigma Beta Club. Your son will learn about many different opportunities that lie ahead of him.  Your son will be working with some of the Foundation Board members and brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity as we teach them about Education, Service and Culture.

For many parents, the Greek community conjures up images of Animal House. That is simply not the reality. There are many myths about the Greek community, but the reality is that men and women in fraternities and sororities are committed to their academics, volunteer time in the community, develop and strengthen their leadership skills, and form a campus network with other Greeks.

What is the purpose for having my son join this club?

The purpose for an organization such as the Sigma Beta Club is many. The Club, being an organization for young male 13-18 students, gives them an opportunity to meet with each other on a regular basis outside the school atmosphere to discuss their interest and problems. The cub also gives its members a chance to meet with college and professional men on a regular basis; therefore, exposing the membership to various viewpoints of educational advancement. The club introduces its members to the national programs of fraternity through the unified national program focus involving the Job Mentoring Program in Bigger & Better Business, Sigma Education Time Tutorial Program in Education, and SATAP Plus Program in Social Action.

 

Sigma Beta Club programs are geared to meet the needs of it’s members, while at the same time provide them with a well rounded outlook that is needed to cope with today’s society. The enrichment programs are cultural, social l, and athletic. They are designed to give members a chance to be innovative, thereby instilling self confidence and a feeling of accomplishment.

 

  • Scholastic resources to help students achieve their academic goals.
  • Leadership skills acquired through hands-on experience.
  • Encouragement to get involved and maximize their potential on campus.
  • Opportunities for active participation in community service projects.

What is the financial obligation?

Like any opportunity for involvement there is a financial commitment associated with joining the Club. The annual dues of $25.00 for local club and $25.00 for the national club operating expenses.

 

Who is actually in charge of the Sigma Beta Club?

The Sigma Beta Club has four advisors and one Director who answer to the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Gamma Eta Sigma Chapter for the clubs day-to-day operations and The Crescent Foundation Board Members for policy and strategic planning of the organization.

Recruitment

 

Informal recruitment is held during the year at scheduled events for the club.  Your son will be invited to attend some affair given by the club members to explore the full range of the organization it’s activities these events are not considered a part of "formal" recruitment, they serve as opportunities for new students to informally get to know about the club. The Membership recruitment process to join the Sigma Beta Club happens in August at a social gathering It is heavily encouraged that you and your son do extensive research into the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc, Sigma Beta Club by visiting their web sites and reading historical documents about the group.

What is my role as a parent?

  • Encourage your son to attend the meetings and events listed on their calendar. Being involved is the best way to meet other club members and learn about their chapters. Involvement in other student organizations is looked favorably upon during the membership selection process.
  • Students need support throughout the school year. Be supportive and learn as much as you can about the club by asking questions of your son about his meetings and events
  • Talk to your son beforehand about the financial obligation. Determine who will pay for what and where the limits are.
  • Do not become too involved in the recruitment . . . this is your son's decision.
  • Too often, parents do not allow their son’s to "fight their own battles." It helps the student mature and gains some assertiveness when allowed to call various advisors if they have questions or concerns.
  • Keep the Sigma Beta Club Advisors and Director Contact information on hand if you have any questions or concerns.
